Justice (Retd.) Ruma Pal: A luminary in the field of law, has been serving the country from 1968 to 2006. Academically, Justice Pal after completing her graduation from Vishwa Bharti University obtained a first class degree in the LLB examination from Nagpur University. She then obtained BCL degree from Oxford University, England.

Justice Ruma Pal was awarded the Motilal Nehru Gold Medal in 1964, when she was the President of the Ralegh Club at Oxford. She started her career in 1968 after she joined the Bar and practiced on the civil side primarily in the High Court of Calcutta. She was elevated as Judge of the High Court in August 1990, and then to the Supreme Court in January, 2000.

On 2nd June 2006 she retired. At present she is advisor to the Asia Pacific Forum on Equality Issues. She is an Executive Council member, International Academy of Law. She is a member of the Committee of experts on the Application of Conventions and Recommendations, International Labour Organization (U.N.). She is also an Executive Council member of the Commonwealth Human Rights initiative. She is at present Director of the International Association of Women judges. During her period as a lawyer and a judge she has participated in several national and international seminars. Some of them were at Manila, Srilanka, Canada, Yale, Rome, Chiang Mai. She was the Executive chairperson of National Services Authority, Chairperson of the Academic Council, Indian Law Institute, Executive Council member of the National Judicial Academy and the WB National University of Juridicial Sciences and the Chairperson of the Museum Committee of the Supreme Court. She was also the editor of The African Law Reports at Oxford. Justice Pal is sensitive to the plights of the underprivileged and committed to the cause of social upliftment.
