Krishna Poonia: Dayawati Modi Stree Shakti Samman, instituted in 1998 by Stree Shakti, is an award by the women, for the women of the women, and in the memory of an extraordinary woman. It is awarded to ‘a woman who dared to dream and had the ability to translate her dream into reality.’ The late Dayawati Modi, a Karmayogini Sanyasini, was an ordinary woman with extraordinary qualities. Smt. Modi was a champion of women’s cause. She established schools and colleges in North India. Driven by the motto ‘Work is Worship’. During her lifetime, she received prestigious awards for her social and cultural activities. Smt. Modi is today a legend.

Krishna Poonia has the distinction of being the first Indian woman to win the Gold Medal in Common Wealth Games 2010 in New Delhi. Krishna led the historic clean sweep of the discus event by clearing 61.5 meters. She contributed to the nation’s pride by being the first Indian woman to win a gold medal in track and field events of Commonwealth Games, also making her the first Indian to win a gold medal in such events after Milkha Singh’s win in 1958. Her achievements include bronze medal in 2006 Doha Asian Games and a gold medal in the 46th Open National athletics championships.

Krishna Poonia has received many prestigious Awards like the Arjuna Award in 2010, Maharana Pratap Award from Government of Rajasthan, Maharana Mewar Award from Mewar Foundation, Bhavani Singh Samman from former royal family of Jaipur and Bhim award from Government of Haryana.

We are privileged to confer on her the Dayawai Modi Stree Shakti Samman for year 2010.
