Jetsun Pema: Dayawati Modi Stree Shakti Samman is an award "By the Woman, For the Woman, Of the Woman" and in memory of an extraordinary woman. The late Dayawati Modi, a Karamyogini was a champion of women’s causes. She was driven by the motto "work is worship" and established schools and colleges in U.P. During her lifetime, she received many prestigious awards for her social & cultural activities. Smt Dayawati Modi is a legend today.

Jetsun Pema is the younger sister of His Holiness The Dalai Lama and a dedicated worker for the cause of women & orphaned and destitute Tibetan children in exile. We are pleased to confer on her the Dayawati Modi Stree Shakti Samman for year 2009.

In 1990 – 1993, Jetsun Pema became the first Woman Minister of the Tibetan Government-in-exile. Jetsun Pema is presently selflessly engaged in community service as Honorary Chairperson, TCV Executive Council, India. The Tibetan Children’s Villages (TCV), India is the largest integrated charitable organistion for the care and education of destitute Tibetan children in exile. She is also Vice Chairman, Governing Body of Tibetan Children’s Villages, India.

Jetsun Pema’s contribution to society has been recognized the world over. She received the "Mother of Tibet" Award in 1995, Medal of UNESCO in 1999, "Women of Courage" Award - Italy in 2002, "Mother’s of Earth" Award - Italy in 2006 and the "Human Rights Hero Award" - Italy in 2010 among other recognitions and international acclaim.

Jetsun Pema has authored several books on Tibet and featured in a film titled "Seven year’s in Tibet". She travels extensively around the world to speak about the cause and care of Tibetan children in exile.
